Last Steps Before Mailing Your Query Letter

Ready to send your query letter to potential publishers or agents? Are you sure?

Did you—

  • have a professional copyeditor edit your query letter?
  • obsess over every detail, including page numbers?
  • send it to yourself, first? (If it’s an email, print it and read it again the next day before sending it.)
  • get your book proposal done before you sent your query letter?

In their article, The Query Letter—Before You Sendand After They Respond, Rick Frishman and Robyn Freedman Spizman take to heart the old adage that you only get one chance to make a first impression.

But what should you do after you send out your letter?

How long should you wait for a reply?

Rick and Robyn recommend two months: “For sixty days, don’t call, write or send e-mail asking whether they received your letter. After sixty days, write a brief inquiry note or e-mail. Also, don’t send stuff that you forgot to include or think might influence their decision.”

After that, wait one more month. Then conclude that your query just wasn’t acceptable, and move on to the next agent or publisher.

Happy hunting.
