Irritating Shopping Carts

Shopping cart design is a source of constant irritation for online shoppers, who don’t much care for constantly being asked, “Do you want fries with that?” Yet asking the user to purchase other related items before adding an item to her cart is the online equivalent.

Other annoyances include requiring users to zero the quantity to remove an item, or to scroll down the page to find the update button. If instructions are required, your cart isn’t intuitive.

Bryan Eisenberg thinks it should be. Elaborating on bad cart design in his article, Shopus Interruptus, he says bad cart design is responsible for shopping cart abandonment.

“Maybe some programmers or developers shop differently than the rest of us,” he speculates.

As he consistently does, Bryan suggests that you design your website to make conducting business easy for your customer, including your shopping cart. That kind of customer focus can only result in a robust marketing platform, as well as immediately increasing your sales conversions and cash flow.
